International Human day

International Human Rights Day 2023: A day is celebrated as International Human Rights Day to spread awareness about the protection of human rights across the world. The purpose of this day is to promote action towards upholding human rights around the world. Let us know when Human Rights Day is celebrated and what is the theme of International Human Rights Day 2023:

International Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on 10 December. At a plenary session on 4 December 1950, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 423, inviting all United Nations parties and other districts to designate 10 December as Human Rights Day and calling for an annual celebration of Human Rights Day announced. December 10 was chosen as Human Rights Day because on this day in the year 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.

The UDHR consists of a preamble and 30 articles that set out a wide range of fundamental human rights and freedoms to which everyone everywhere around the world is entitled. It guarantees the rights of everyone without distinction as to nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, religion, language or any other status.

International Human Rights Theme

Every year International Human Rights Day is celebrated keeping a particular theme in mind. The theme of Human Rights Day 2023 this year is:

International Human Rights Day 2022 Theme: “Equality, Freedom, and Justice for All”

In its preamble, the UDHR highlights that “Recognition of the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world”. One purpose of celebrating Human Rights Day is to increase knowledge of the UDHR as a foundational blueprint for standing up for human rights and taking concrete actions to tackle global issues.

Last year, the theme of International Human Rights Day 2021 was- “Equality: Reducing Inequalities, advancing human rights.”
